Congressional Dems are calling for Rummy to resign and speculation has become rampant within the last 24 hours over whether he may have to step down. Bush has voiced his support through his spokesman but I have a sense that the Defense Secretary is not widely liked in Congress (the recent prisoner abuse scandal only seeking to stir past resentment over the Pentagon's secrecy) and that Powell would be only too happy to see Rummy go.
If the hearing tomorrow reveals that Rummy essentially covered up what he knew about the prisoner abuse story and his answers fail to satisfy Congress, then I think Rummy will essentially be left with no option but to resign at the risk of further embarrassing his boss, the President.
At this point, the only way Bush could save face, would be if Rummy submitted his own letter of resignation, keeping the President from having to force him to step down.
The ToughEnough.org prediction (we're ALMOST never wrong): Rummy resigns by the end of next week.
