Newsweek

This whole thing is clearly the Pentagon's fault. They seem to enjoy blaming everyone but themselves for the death and destruction brought about by their policies in the Middle East. I take Newsweek at their word that they showed the article, pre-publication to two U.S. officials, neither of whom would confirm nor deny the report and that the original information came from a trusted government source. Waiting until after publication to deny the facts of the report, forcing Newsweek to offer a partial retraction, only makes it look like the Pentagon is seeking to control the media when it reports something they don't like.

Never mind the fact that in this case, Newsweek was reporting nothing new.

(Juan Cole has more.)
