Yesterday I caught the Q&A portion on BookTV of Alexandra Pelosi's reading from her new book, Sneaking into the Flying Circus: How the Media Turn Our Presidential Campaigns into Freak Shows. I found her to be an annoyingly cutesy and intrusive presence in her movie Diary of a Political Tourist. But in yesterday's C-Span appearance she offered callow "insights" into the state of interaction between the democratic candidates and the press. She opined that John Kerry was "totally clueless" and "had no idea how his own idea of himself differed from the way other people saw him."
My question for this particularly clueless press person is, "How do you know this?" Are you a John Kerry mindreader?
Here's another: "Excuse me, but you are part of the press, are you not?" You cannot be part of a group and yet claim to be an objective observer of that same group.
Matt Taibbi also has a new book out, Spanking the Donkey: On the Campaign Trail with the Democrats. Taibbi reportedly distinguished himself on the campaign trail by appearing in front of Kerry in a gorilla suit.
Is this the beginning of a new cottage industry? These two young people don't appear to be Bush voters, yet here they are gleefully mocking the democrats, as if this sort of cynicism has no consequence. Trying to appear edgy when what you really are is throwing tantrums in order to get attention doesn't cut it in the adult world.
Hunter Thompson, who lived his life right on the knife's edge, must be rolling over in his grave.
