Today’s
Liberal Oasis cuts right to the heart of the question of why the administration has yet to come up with an Iraq exit strategy.
There’s a reason why there is no GOP exit strategy. Because the GOPers don’t want to leave.
They want permanent military bases in Iraq.
And we don’t. That’s the difference.
This is a gulf between the Democratic and Republican positions that is a hundred miles wide, and one that the Democrats should be able to pound away at without mercy. They can also carry it out to its logical extension and ask the American public how it feels about keeping our soldiers in Iraq on a permanent basis.
We could also refer back to
Tom Oliphant's column from yesterday's Boston Globe. How are the Iraqi people to feel they own their own country if their landscape is pocked with permanent U.S. military installations?
