Did the medal controversy backfire on Bush?

Since the medals/ribbons brou-haha hit the airwaves last Monday, Kerry has climbed up over Bush in the Rassmussen Presidential Tracking Poll. It's now Kerry 46, Bush 44. On Monday, the day the story broke, it was Bush 48, Kerry 44.

A new CBS/NY Times poll also has Kerry ahead of Bush in a two-way matchup 46-44.(Rasmussen is also a two-way poll and excludes Nader). While Kerry had been ahead in the two way by as much as 5 points in the CBS/Times poll a month ago, interestingly enough, in a three way matchup with Nader, Kerry is at 41 and Bush 43 with Nader getting only 5 points. A month ago, the same three way matchup had Kerry 38, Bush 46 and Nader 7.

However, in the last few weeks several polls had shown Bush edging ahead of Kerry and it may be that the tide has turned and Kerry come up some. Still, the race is essentially a tie.
