While I agree with this completely, I'd also raise a huge caution flag: Never underestimate the capacity of American voters to vote against their own self-interests or common sense. Or should I say lack of common sense?
The terrible truth is, the vast majority of Americans are somehow aching for a republican to drive a wedge between them and whoever the Democratic candidate will be.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I agree - I would never make the mistake of underestimating the public's ability to vote against its own best interests.
I go back and forth as to which republican would be the worst case scenario. Right now I'm most afraid of the outwardly genial (and loony) Huckabee.
I'd also be wary of Giuliani. His outward lack of geniality reflects an inward need to control everything and everybody. While mayor he:
•Banned demonstrations from the steps of city hall (except for demonstrations he liked, such as in favor of the NY Yankees. There goes political discourse.
•Fired the police commissioner who put in the policing policies that led to the great drop in crime Giuliani likes to take credit for. The reason? The commissioner was getting too much credit instead of Giuliani. So we ended up with a hack named Howard Safir and then with corrupt, mafia-connected Bernie Kerik.
• Tried to call off mayoral elections when his term was up, on the grounds we all needed him too much. In other words, he sent up a trial balloon for a coup d'etat.
Need I go on?
Giuliani terrifies me. They all do - each in his own peculiar way. Even Ron Paul - the new darling of the left wing (do they have any idea what his real positions are?)
