Why does every single caller to talk shows - and NPR talk shows in particular - insist on starting their conversation with, "Thank you for taking my call"?
I mean, really.
How many minutes of potentially interesting talk are wasted with this innocuous but tedious pleasantry? Think of the listeners. Think how many times per hour they have to sit through the same exchange, which interrupts the show's intellectual momentum while adding nothing.
So I'm asking you nicely to please jump right into it. No one will consider you rude.
