About that speech Saturday.

Freeperville is going nuts. Lefty freeperville is going nuts. And all the Kerry bashers have to offer is a weak "too little too late" and "he had his chance." Nothing on the content. Nothing on what it might have meant for a large portion of the country to hear him say what he said about the Bush administration's crimes, and about what the American tradition of dissent means to our country.

I have no crystal ball, and no idea what will come of all this. No one at this point, including Kerry, knows if he's going to run in 2008. But there is no fucking excuse for tearing down a democrat who stands up and says what people have been begging them all to say for so long now.

I'm still contemplating the roaring approval we heard in Faneuil Hall Saturday, and how best to describe it. The word that keeps coming into my head is "thirsty." The crowd was dying to hear him say those words, and they flat-out loved him for saying them.

This was a crowd predisposed to approve of Kerry, but it didn't feel in any way like a campaign or partisan event. It felt like a coming out party. Kerry said what we all have known all along was in his heart - it rang so true - in front of his family, his friends, and his supporters. It was an act of courage, conviction, and of liberation. It was something wonderful to witness.

The video of the speech will hopefully be available online very soon. I'll post a link when it is. And please, if you haven't seen it yet, go listen.

[UPDATE]: a highlight video is up, here, but for full effect you really need to see the whole thing.
[UPDATE2]: The full speech is up again here

And for a proper Massachusetts-accented smackdown of the RNC response to the speech, don't miss Elias's post, Scumbag Sunday.
