Atrios has offered up a bunch of links this morning explaining that, in his words, Alito is "nuttier that Rehnquist."
Have a look.
What is required in this situation, is, at a minimum to get a majority of Democratic Senators on the record (and preferably on TV as well) opposing Alito. They need to say the same thing (or variations of it): The President missed an opportunity to expand the diversity of the court by nominating an extremist in the hopes of mending the breach within his own party caused by the failed Miers nomination.
I know that seems long winded, and I don't suggest it be repeated verbatim, but the key words I'd like to hear from the mouths of any Democrat opposed to Miers are: diversity, extremist, Miers.
"Diversity" suggests there is another way (diversity on the high court being a uniquely Democratic ideal).
"Extremist" suggests the true nature of Alito's judicial views.
"Miers" reminds people just how it was Alito came to be the nominee and helps to reinforce the first two in suggesting that Alito is simply a response to an earlier failure.
