Lying to the Times

Either Rove's buddy lied to the Times, or Novak was lying when asked about how he got Plame's name immediately after the publication of his column. (What's interesting here, is that Novak's first comments on the sourcing of his article came before the whole brou-haha and IMO have a far better chance of not being lies then anything said now.) Novak, in an interview, said his sources had come to him with the information. "I didn't dig it out, it was given to me," he said. "They thought it was significant, they gave me the name and I used it."

Given the fact that the Times' source was a Rove supporter and is essentially pushing days old GOP talking points that somehow reporters had top secret information about a clandestine officer that administration official didn't (which is ridiculous on its face) I think Novak's original comments are probably more accurate. This new twist is simply another after-the-fact administration cover story. Ironically, the nature of this cover story could be the very thing Fitzgerald is investigating in his reported pursuit of obstruction of justice charges.
