Lowering expectations
This is overdue. There is nothing wrong with Reid stating that it would take "a miracle" to win back the Senate in '06. Not that Democrats need to repeat this over and over, but the occasional off-hand remark will have the effect of lowering expectations in advance of the midterms and make it much easier for Democrats to claim victory even if all they manage is to hold on to the current spread. We are not a party that will overcome it's problems in two years - it's going to take time and victory should be measured in small steps.
