Lurking inside Matt Bai's marvelous piece on the Ohio vote in this past Sunday's New York Times Magazine are some impressive facts:
-- Dems usually aim to win Cuyahoga County (which has Cleveland) by more than 150,000 votes to have a chance at the state. Kerry won that county by more than 217,000 votes.
-- They have to be competitive--- just stay close--- in Franklin County (Columbus and suburbs). Kerry won the county.
-- In Hamilton County (Cincinnati), Dems have to keep the Rep margin to less than 60,000 votes. Bush won the county by less than 25,000 votes.
--America Coming Together aimed for 350,540 votes in Cuyahoga. Kerry got 433,262. The goal in Franklin was 262,895; Kerry won 275,573.
-- Kerry won more votes in Ohio than any other Democrat in history: 2.66 million votes.
-- Nationwide, Kerry outpaced Gore from 2000 by 4,862,000 votes.
Nicely done, ACT and Mr Senator.
We'll get 'em next time.
