NY Times: Just making stuff up?

On the question of who did better on the domestic portion of last Friday's debate, Gallup's post-debate snap poll has this:
    The Economy: pre-debate: Bush 50, Kerry 44; post-debate Kerry 49, Bush 49
    ...
Agreed with you more on the issues you care about: pre-debate: Bush 49, Kerry 46; post-debate: Bush 50, Kerry 49.
    ...
    Has a good understanding of issues:Kerry 47, Bush 42
The Times says this in an online article out today:
Against expectation, Mr. Bush appeared Friday to fare best in the half of the debate devoted to domestic issues, analysts and many viewers said. His generally direct responses and frequent use of humor contrasted to Mr. Kerry's sometimes stiffer replies.
What are they talking about?
