Watching the debate last night I was reminded of the Charles Perrault story "
The Fairies". Two sisters, one sweet-tempered and kind, and the other equally arrogant and ill-tempered. You get the idea. When Edwards speaks, pearls and diamonds of sincerity fall from his mouth. When Cheney opens his mouth, out pour lies like toads and snakes. Maureen Dowd referred to this uncharming quality in a
column a while back, and it resonated.
Today
Digby has this to say,
But I think Cheney may have set a record for how many times a candidate can outright, baldfacedly lie in an hour and a half on national television. And that's saying something. He and Junior really are living in some sort of dreamworld where they apparently don't have to worry that their every previous public statement is noted and available for the whole world to see. Here on planet earth we have google and lexis-nexis and we can dig up all the examples of when they said things they claim they didn't say.
It seems that Cheney's master strategy was to pack as many lies as possible into each answer with the hope that Edwards wouldn't be able to debunk every one in the rebuttal time allotted. If relying on bulk quantities of lies is the *ies' best hope, things are looking good for the Kerry/Edwards ticket.
