Proportional spacing, superscripts

So we are supposed to believe that a major news organization presented forged documents in a story about Bush's failure to adequately perform his Guard duty, because some right-wing nuts mistakenly thought that typewriters with proportional letter spacing and superscript fonts didn't exist in 1972?

Turns out both were in existance in typewriters manufactured by IBM and some examples of their use (in typed government memos) can be found here.

In addition, such typewriters were in fact being advertised by IBM as early as 1941.(courtesy of Atrios)
