Ok, so the Monday women's event at the Waldorf-Astoria is on C-Span. Center stage, cabinet members and high administration officials who are women. Stage left, Barbara Bush (senior), Doro Bush, and the Bush twins. Stage right, Lynne Cheney and her daughter Liz. Officiating, some woman named Cathy Gillespie (wife of Ed?)
Doro Bush introduces her mother.
Liz Cheney introduces her mother.
Way too many mentions of how Afghan women can now attend school.
Way too many references to George Bush's love of strong women.
Did Barbara Bush ever come across as cozy or maternal? She is totally humorless but makes unfunny jokes about the unruliness of her granddaughters, her husband's propensity to jump out of airplanes, and how she listens to books on tape and does needlepoint while her husband watches tv news. Lynne Cheney is equally steely, slightly more charming.
Money quote:
- "George loved his job as Governor of Texas, but decided to run for President because he saw that America needed leadership," said Mrs. Barbara Bush. "Then 9-11 turned our world upside down, and even the President's father and I were in awe as we watched his strength, his courage, and his conviction. He is the right man to lead our country through these troubled times and to protect the values we hold so dear."
These women are impossibly self-congratulatory and smug. Not sure I can keep this up.
