A question

I live in that liberal bastion Massachusetts. I will say that my first vote for president was cast by absentee ballot from college for George McGovern, and therefore I never assume any political experiences I have are in any way representative of the norm.

As an early Kerry supporter I've been wearing a Kerry button for over ten months now, and have heard many people have commented on it. Two more people made comments today, and am starting to see certain patterns.

Some people who have spontaneously commented on my Kerry button:

Drugstore cashier
Man behind the fish counter at Whole Foods
Gas station attendant
Mother of a very young cello student

All the comments have been enthusiastic. All have been positive. All went out of their way to make conversation. And every single one of these people was a person of color. This leads me to wonder whether the journalists who have written that the Kerry campaign is not connecting with the black community have any idea what they are talking about.

Or maybe it's just Massachusetts.

I'm curious to hear how your observations compare. Please do leave a comment.
