Senior security sources report: US commanders decided to de-escalate warfare on major fronts in Iraq as pressing forward would entail massive civilian casualties. Unconfirmed casualty figures 51 US and allied deaths this week, 450 Iraqi killed in Fallujah.

Third minister quits provisional Iraqi Governing Council and fourth threatens to resign.

“America is the big devil and Britain and Blair are the lesser devils,” a preacher at Baghdad’s Umm Al-Qura Mosque told an angry congregation. Reflecting a growing hostility to outsiders, one worshiper said: “When we get the order for jihad, no foreigner will be safe in Iraq.”
